Why I Added a Brain-Centred Approach to My Vocal Teaching

How combining vocal technique with NeuroVocal principles has shaped the way I teach and support singers.

I've been teaching singing for many years, and throughout that time I've remained committed to ongoing professional development, seeking out training and mentorship from leading specialists in vocal pedagogy and performance.

One thing I've always believed is that good vocal technique matters.

That hasn't changed.

What has changed is my understanding of how the brain learns.

As a NeuroVocal Method Certified Coach, I've deepened my understanding of the role the brain plays in learning new vocal skills.

It hasn't replaced my knowledge of the voice. If anything, it's strengthened it.

It's also helped me better understand why singers can sometimes feel stuck, even when they're doing all the "right" vocal exercises.

Perhaps you've asked yourself...

  • How do I sing higher?

  • How do I stop straining?

  • How do I gain stability throughout my range?

  • Why can't I sing with the freedom, ease, and power I know is in my voice?

These questions often lead us to focus on vocal technique, and rightly so.

Sometimes, the missing piece isn't another exercise. It's understanding how the brain learns.

Rather than simply asking a singer to repeat an exercise until it works, I'm now thinking more deeply about how they're learning, what feedback will help them most, and how to create the right conditions for lasting vocal change.

What Changed for Me

One of the biggest shifts I noticed when I started applying these principles to my own singing was in how my voice felt.

As someone with a naturally lighter voice, I'd always worked hard to develop more strength and power in my upper register.

As I started combining these principles with my vocal training, those notes began to feel easier.

My voice felt more stable, more powerful, and much less effortful.

It wasn't because I'd discovered a magic exercise.

It was because I better understood how I learn.

Bringing It Into My Teaching

As a result of my NeuroVocal Method training, I can guide each singer with a personalised approach that helps healthy vocal habits become more natural and lasting.

Understanding how the brain builds new neural pathways allows me to create learning experiences that support more efficient learning and lasting vocal change.

The result? Singing that feels more easeful, more confident, more powerful, and, most importantly, more joyful.
