A week in the Singing Studio: Variety, Fun, and Working with Each Individual Singer

I’ve been reflecting on the last week of singing lessons in the studio. It’s been really fun and varied!

On Monday I had a fun lesson with a student who brought some of her choir pieces. She’s singing a high soprano part with lots of jumps and had been getting quite fatigued. We found strategies to help her find more ease in those higher notes, so she can feel confident at the next choir practice.

One of my teens is preparing a jazz solo for next month. She had been playing it safe and keeping everything very clean. Having sung a lot of musical theatre recently, she was still in that mindset. I encouraged her to push boundaries and allow things to be a little "dirtier." We found a great middle ground, which was really fun and helped her express herself more fully.

I also had a lovely lesson with one of my avocational adult singers. She’d had a couple of weeks off because of half term and being ill, and came in a bit worried her voice wouldn’t work the same way. We got back into it and found that ease in her voice again, focusing on connecting with her chest voice in a way that felt good.

One teen came in feeling tired and with a sore throat. We did a short warm-up on lip bubbles and then spent most of the lesson talking through her song for an upcoming performance. We discussed phrasing, expression, and how she wanted to tell the story.

Even without much singing, it was a productive session, showing how a non-singing lesson can still be really valuable.

Another student, who loves Sienna Spiro’s songs, brought in You Stole the Show. We worked on the higher parts without trying to make the sound pretty or chase a tone. When she leaned into it and let it be what it needed to be, her voice slotted into such a great place. She was amazed at how easy it suddenly felt.

It’s been a mix of singing lessons, which is one of the aspects I most love about my work. Every voice is different, every session unique, and there’s always something new to explore in vocal coaching.
