Nervous, Excited, Inspired: The Start of a New Term in the Vocal Studio

Students are booking in their preferred slots, and I’m trying to move schedules around like a tricky game of Tetris—shuffling things, making everything slot into place.

There’s this energy, this feeling of fresh space—it feels inspiring, creative… new for some, familiar for others.

And it’s incredible… exciting, but a little intimidating too.

It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous if you’re just starting your vocal journey… and even if you’re returning for another year, that feeling can still sneak in.

  • What if I can’t hit the notes correctly?

  • Will I make mistakes in front of the teacher?

  • What if I forget what I learned last time?

  • Am I ready for all the exercises and techniques?

  • Will I ever find my own voice?

  • What if I don’t understand the terminology or instructions?

  • What if I’m not “musical enough”?

All of that is completely normal. That’s why lessons always start where you are, building from there—judgment-free, supportive, and most importantly… fun.

And then there are the returning students.

Some have already been preparing all summer, thinking ahead to auditions for Little Shop of Horrors. They’ve been practicing, getting ready, and you can see the focus and determination in them.

For the student auditioning for Audrey, I reminded her that the most important thing is to audition knowing that she’s well prepared, she’s done the work, and just to have FUN!

The outcome ISN'T the focus—she will be given the right role, one that suits her!

Meanwhile, some students are perparing for big roles. Take the lead in Shrek—Princess Fiona.

It’s a huge role with so many songs, several solos, and group numbers. It requires incredible vocal versatility—colour, range, control—alongside acting ability and, of course, great comedic timing.

Watching her come in, having already started the work, ready to tackle such a big challenge… it’s hugely inspiring as a coach. I can’t wait to see the results on stage months down the line.

For all students, whether they’re new or returning, the most important thing is to come in knowing they’ve prepared, trusting the work they’ve done, and allowing themselves to have fun.

Learning, growth, curiosity, and joy—that’s what makes this journey so rewarding.

From nervous first-timers to returning students tackling big roles, the start of a term is a reminder of why I love teaching—the mix of excitement, growth, and joy that fills the studio every day.
