Rediscovering the Joy of Singing as an Adult Singer

I am amazed by the increasing number of women wanting to revisit and explore their voices as adults.

They come for vocal coaching because they want to get to know their voice, and they want to gain ownership over it.

Many had “traditional” singing lessons as teenagers. These often involved exams and a very restricted, top-down approach, where there was a clear sense of right and wrong, of I can sing or I can’t sing.

As adults, having often stopped singing altogether,  they come to lessons wanting to know if they can sing, and whether they even have a voice.

And most importantly, they want permission to use it.

Because they love to sing, but can’t connect with the JOY OF SINGING.

This is something I experienced myself in my own singing journey.

For a long time, I couldn’t understand it, and I kept it to myself because I didn’t know what was wrong with me. Now I’m realising how many people feel the same.

Once it’s clear they are in a safe, non-judgmental space, and I’m very intentional about creating that, I guide them in exploring their voice in a non-punitive way, but rather in a joyous way.

And then something magical happens.

I see it in the singers I work with.

The moment we stop worrying about doing it right or wrong, about whether we can sing, and simply dive into exploring our voices, a whole new way of experiencing our voice opens up.

One that leads to freedom, joy, and power.
